Extraction of Stress-Intensity Factor from In-Plane Displacements Measured by Holographic Interferometry

Source

Utilizing the well-known Westergaard approach in conjunction with Goursat-Kolosov series stress functions, suitable series solutions are developed for stresses and displacements around the crack tip. In-plane displacement data from the entire field near the crack tip are obtained by holographic interferometry. Measurement errors in the experimental data are minimized by the least-squares method. Series solution of displacements together with experimental data is used to establish the loss of inverse square-root singularity at the free surface-crack border intersection. Experimental results are compared with the analytical results from recent studies, and a good correlation is found between analytical and experimental values.
