The Influence of Pavement Evenness and Macrotexture on Fuel Consumption

Source

In order to estimate the influence of evenness and macrotexture of the paved roads on fuel consumption of vehicles, three practical tests have been made: in the laboratory, with a vibrator bench to simulate unevenness; on a track to test the extreme values of the macrotexture of pavements; and on open roads with both unevenness and macrotexture. Pavement characteristics have been recorded with usual apparatus for road engineers. The effects have been expressed as extra fuel consumption, versus a completely smooth and even pavement. Both unevenness and macrotexture show a measurable extra fuel consumption. But the growing laws are not linear, and a compromise can be found for evenness according to maintenance cost and for macrotexture according to safety when wet.
