Influence of Road Surface Roughness on Tire Noise Generation in the Federal Republic of Germany


The surface properties of a road pavement must fulfill a long list of requirements. Recently, this list has been extended to include acoustic properties. Since 1986, test stretches have been layed in the Federal Republic of Germany, with the goal of exploring noise-reducing wearing courses. Two methods are being used to evaluate tire noise, namely, the measurement of the noise immissions (that is, the noise propagated) with a fixed microphone and the noise emissions (that is, the noise sources) with a moving microphone in the near field of the tire. Experience shows that a high void content as well as a fine-grained surface is acoustically desirable. By employing appropriate drainage asphalt, the equivalent A-weighted sound level (Leq) can be reduced by 3 to 5 dB(A) in comparison with an asphalt concrete 0/11.
