Carbonation of Calcium and Magnesium Oxides

Source

To reduce excessive maintenance at a water softening plant due to scale buildup at meters and filter clogging, it was decided to carbonate the highly alkaline water. This paper reports the author's experiences in the carbonation of calcium and calcium hydroxide as well as magnesium and magnesium hydroxide. A new method of carbonating lime slurries is outlined which derives the most advantage from the lime and carbon dioxide that are used in the carbonation process.
