The Future of a High-Temperature, High-Shear Engine Oil Viscosity Classification in SAE J300

Source

Negotiations to include high-temperature, high-shear viscosity limits in Engine Oil Viscosity Classification SAE J300 have been in progress for twelve years, with vigorous activity since late 1984. Every effort is being made to define a system that will maintain continuity with the current J300. Although agreement with the concept in principle has been reached, consensus on the choice of limits has remained elusive. Because resolution of the technical details and highly emotional issues surrounding limits for some of the viscosity grades appears to remain well beyond reach, it seems unlikely that any full-scale classification system will appear in the near future. However, it is likely that limits for specific viscosity grades of major interest to engine manufacturers will soon be added to SAE J300.
