Influence of Temperature on the Permeation Properties of Protective Clothing Materials

Source

Chemical permeation measurements were made for six chemical/polymer systems at five different temperatures, ranging from 25 to 65°C. The results showed that although both permeation rate and breakthrough time vary exponentially with temperture, breakthrought time is more dependent on temperature. The effect of temperature on the solubility of chemicals in polymers (with resulting polymer swelling) was also studied by longterm immersion experiments, and diffusion coefficients were calculated. Both solubility and diffusion coefficient vary exponentially with temperature. But the heat of sorption is much smaller than activation energy for diffusion. Consequently, the temperature dependency of permeation observed was attributed primarily to the activation of diffusive transport.
