Nutritional Status and Oxidants


This review examines the relationship between vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, copper, zinc, and other dietary antioxidants and the so-called antioxidant defense systems of the lung. The effects of severe caloric and protein malnutrition and vitamin B-6 deficiency on lung development will also be reviewed. The animal models of oxidant-induced injury discussed include those for paraquat, ozone, nitrogen dioxide, and oxygen toxicity, as well as selected experiments with in vitro systems. Susceptible human populations at risk for oxidant-induced lung damage by virtue of nutritional deficiencies are identified and discussed.
