An Unexpected Interaction Between Inerts Used in Solvent Based Formulations

Source

In the course of an investigation on a formulation, it was found that under certain conditions two inert ingredients (calcium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (CaDDBS) and triethylene glycol (TEG) combined to form a crystalline precipitate. This novel complex of CaDDBS and TEG occurs only in non-aqueous systems; the presence of small amounts of water prevents its formation. The effects of temperature, chemical structure of the CaDDBS, water content and alcohol content are addressed.
