Modification of an Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometer for Analysis of Plutonium Impurities

Source

The current status of inductively coupled plasma development for use in determining impurities in plutonium metal at Rockwell International's Rocky Flats Plant is discussed in this paper. The design and installation of the facility are discussed in detail, and the proposed chemical procedure is mentioned briefly. To provide protection to personnel, the plasma torch is installed inside an open-faced hood. Light from the torch is transferred to the polychromator through a quartz window or to supplemental monochromators using quartz fiber-optic cables. After the plutonium and americium are removed by a solvent extraction procedure, the impurities remaining in the aqueous phase are analyzed with the aid of an autosampler and peristaltic pump located in an adjacent glove box.
