Lube Manufacturing Technology and Engine Oil Pumpability

Lube basestocks are manufactured by four process technologies, which are a series of physical and chemical operations. This separation science determines many of the chemical and physical properties that basestocks exhibit in engine oils. The four technologies can produce basestocks with the same physical properties -- viscosity, viscosity index, and pour point -- and yet are desirable mixtures of different hydrocarbons. Basestocks with the same physical properties, but manufactured by different technologies, need not have the same wax compositions or show the same low temperature engine oil pumpability properties.
