Performance Appraisal of Full-Size Radioactive Waste Packages


Before final storage in a subsurface site, each kind of encapsulated or immobilized radioactive waste has to be recognized as acceptable for this situation. To reach this goal, French radioactive waste policy recommends an exhaustive characterization of radioactive packages. Complying with this regulation, each processing step, from the waste production to ultimate storage (identification, sorting out, conditioning, transporting, storage, and so on) necessitates a knowledge of specific properties. Among them are physical and mechanical characteristics, confinement characteristics, and behavior in relation to the stability and the aging of the embedded wastes. To give an overview, examples of results with comments will be presented and compared.
