Low-Level Radioactive Waste Disposal in the United States

Source

In this paper, we discuss the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC) requirements for structural stability for Classes B and C low-level radioactive wastes (LLW), as expressed in Part 61 to Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR Part 61). Also discussed is the guidance developed by the NRC staff for the stabilization methods of major current interest. These include the use of (1) solidification/stabilization media, (2) high integrity containers, and (3) engineered alternatives, such as below-ground vaults and earth-mounded concrete bunkers, for disposal of LLW.
