Applications of Microscopic Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometry Sampling Techniques for the Analysis of Polymer Systems

The packaging industry is in the midst of a revolution in which plastics are replacing other materials. The form of such plastic packaging is often complex multilayer films. Analytical techniques are described for the characterization of such multilayer structures. These techniques include internal reflection spectroscopy and microsampling/Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry (FT-IR). The composition of polymeric films is shown to be amenable to characterization by these techniques.

A technique to simultaneously measure thermal property response and infrared spectra on specimens of microscopic dimensions has been demonstrated. The apparatus consists of a microscopic differential scanning calorimetric cell and infrared microsampling accessory mounted in a FT-IR. The technique was demonstrated through the study of the melting of polypropylene. The technique is expected to have a wide range of applications in many areas of science, including chemistry, physics, and biology.
