Identification of Fatigue Failure Modes in Carbon Fibre Reinforced Composites with the Energy Discriminating Acoustic Emission Method


Tension-tension fatigue of carbon fibre reinforced composite laminates is characterized by the initiation and growth of specific damage modes. A method was developed to study the AE-signals released from each individual damage source so that the growth of distinct fatigue damage modes could be monitored. The obtained results correlated well with the real damage extent of each individual damage mode. This is an improvement compared to the general information the total number of acoustic emission signals can give on the fatigue degradation of the specimens.
