Design and Testing of a Landfill Final Cover With Geomembrane

In order to evaluate the feasibility of construction and the adequacy of design of a landfill final cover incorporating a geomembrane, a three-phase investigation was conducted. The frictional characteristics of a sand-geomembrane interface was determined using a tilt apparatus. Stability of an element of the final cover under the design rainfall and freeze-thaw conditions was evaluated using a large size tilt table. Two test plots constructed at 25 percent slopes and periodic observations for over a year provided information on construction feasibility and the behavior of the final cover system under field conditions. Based on the results of the three phases of investigations it was concluded that final covers incorporating geomembranes can be designed and constructed for slopes of 25 percent.
