Comparison of Elastic-Plastic Fracture Mechanics Techniques


The first part of this paper reviews the adequacy of simple estimation procedures for predicting the crack growth and failure behavior of cracked structures. These simple methods include: J-estimation schemes (where five different schemes are presented including two new methods), the R6 approach, and the VR-curve technique. The second part of the paper discusses methods for predicting elastic-plastic fracture under conditions where the simple schemes are not applicable. This includes a discussion of integral parameters, mainly focusing on the T*-integral, and the local (or damage) based approaches. These two approaches are required where the degradation near a crack tip depends on the history of damage accumulation.
