Mechanics and Micromechanics of Fatigue Crack Propagation


The present paper reviews major developments in mechanics and micromechanics of fatigue crack propagation at an ambient temperature over the past two decades, and suggests directions of future developments. Mechanics of plastic deformation and closure of fatigue cracks under cyclic loading will first be presented, then the propagation behavior of long and short cracks will be described. Emphasis will be placed on the experimental as well as the theoretical aspects of the mechanical treatment of fatigue crack propagation.
