Socioeconomic Barriers in Computerizing Materials Data

While the computer technology, both hardware and software, exists to allow easy and comprehensive access to computerized data on engineering materials, only a few data bases are publicly available today. The reason for this is a set of barriers based on socioeconomic factors that are only partly recognized. In this paper, the use of materials data is examined to identify some of these socioeconomic barriers. They primarily arise from three factors: complex usage patterns, a relatively new computer audience combined with an exploding computer technology, and a lack of understanding of the positive impact of computerized materials data. Ways to overcome these barriers are suggested.
