Standards for Computerized Material Property Data—ASTM Committee E-49

Source

ASTM Committee E-49 on the Computerization of Materials Property Data was instituted in 1986 to provide guidance to individuals and organizations building machine-readable data bases and to aid in the development of compatible and consistent sources capable of a reasonable exchange of information. In the relatively short interval since then, progress has been made in several areas, most notably in the development of formats for the characterization of materials and reporting of test data. Progress has been most rapid in the more mature and stable material classes like metals and polymers. The relative newness and lack of stability of terminology and test procedures for advanced materials will require more time and effort before major strides are apparent. ASTM Committee E-49 is also taking on the significant challenges of data exchange formats and guidelines for the evaluation of data.

Continued rapid progress in all of these areas is essential if we are to maximize the opportunity to improve the quality of materials related decisions through the use of easily accessible and exchangeable numeric performance data.
