Required Reliability of Reactive Metal Mill Products and Process Equipment

The process industry uses many different materials to construct its plants and equipment. The selection and use of these different materials of construction involves various compromises to achieve the corporate goal of a suitable return on investment. To achieve the required return on investment, the process plants must also achieve and maintain a high reliability. The personnel concerned with engineering, design, fabrication, operations, and maintenance practices must weigh various options afforded by different materials and select those materials and practices that provide the optimum economic benefit. Basic to material selection are the various standards and codes that define the materials available and how these materials are to be used. Since the reactive metals are now used within the process industry standards, such as those of ASTM, must reflect the process industry's need for reliable materials.
