Fatigue Maps for Titanium Matrix Composites


The present article attempts to bring together many of the observations and measurements pertaining to fatigue cracking and fracture of unidirectional titanium matrix composites at ambient temperature into a fatigue fracture map. The map identifies the regimes in which various mechanisms operate, allowing fatigue life predictions to be made. The map is constructed using micromechanical models that incorporate crack bridging. The article also demonstrates the utility of the models in describing the experimental data for one specific composite system.
