Results of Round Robin Studies of Light- and Water-Exposure Standard Practices


Round robin studies of the ASTM standard practices for laboratory accelerated weathering of non-metallic materials have been conducted over the past five years. Test specimens were exposed in commonly specified exposure devices and test conditions. Results from this work show that there is substantial variability between laboratories when comparing the absolute gloss values of exposed polyvinylchoride films for all the standard practices. In contrast, the durability rankings (gloss retention) for a series of materials is highly reproducible between laboratories. By converting the absolute gloss values to relative ranks, the variability in failure rates (test severity) between the individual labs can be ignored.
