Determination of Voids Under Rigid Pavements Using Impulse Response Method

Source

Presence of voids and loss of support are the major factors contributing to the premature distress of rigid pavements. To detect voids, nondestructive testing techniques are normally utilized. One of the more promising methods in this area is the Impulse Response (IR) method.A careful survey of the literature indicates that the method is employed in a rather subjective manner and is not based upon a solid theoretical background. In this paper, a method for reducing the impulse response data is presented. The outcomes of field and laboratory testing are also reported. From these results, the proposed methodology seems quite simple and has the potential for becoming an effective tool for detecting voids in rigid pavements.
