Chemical Components and Mechanical Properties of Urinary Calculi

Source

As part of a research project on the intracorporeal destruction of urinary calculi with a small dose of explosives, a study of the correlation between the chemical components and the mechanical properties of urinary calculi was made. Compressive strength, tensile strength, and modulus of elasticity under dry and wet conditions were measured to find the mechanical properties of urinary calculi. All urinary calculi in the dry condition could be classified into two groups with a borderline of 6.5 MPa for compressive strength, 1.5 MPa for tensile strength, and 600 MPa for modulus of elasticity, and most of the calculi fell below the borderline. The chemical composition of calculi belonging to the high-strength calculus group was mostly a mixture of calcium phosphate and calcium oxalate. The strength of calculi in the wet condition was less than that in the dry condition.
