Standardization of Terminology for Recycling and Degradation of Plastics

ASTM Technical Committee D-20 on Plastics is a leader in standards for recycling plastics (in Subcommittee D-20.95) and degradation of plastics (in Subcommittee D-20.96), both topics of great interest and importance to the general public. This paper will describe the selection of terms and crafting of definitions for each of these fields using the procedures of due process and the full consensus system established by ASTM. Extension of the work of harmonizing standard abbreviated terms for the various plastics will be described in a discussion of marking systems to be used for identifying plastic materials so they can be channeled into appropriate uses as they become available in recycling operations. Finally, the paper will describe the extension of the work in the United States to activities and development of standards in the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
