New Technologies for Language Specialists: Developments at the Department of the Secretary of State of Canada

Source

The Department of the Secretary of State of Canada, which is responsible for verifying and standardizing the English and French terminology used throughout the federal public service, has developed a great deal of expertise in the area of comparative terminology work. Language specialists in the Department recognize the importance of using computerized tools to create and disseminate correct, bilingual terminology. The integration of the Department's linguistic data bank, a newly developed, database-oriented electronic publishing system, and a versatile, microcomputer-based terminologist's workstation will contribute greatly to the success of the Department's terminology standardization efforts by providing the means to store, analyze, synthesize, retrieve, and distribute information promptly and efficiently. CD-ROM has proven to be an excellent distribution medium for the linguistic data bank, ensuring the widespread and timely availability of vast amounts of terminological information.
