Introducing the United States to the ISO Committee on Terminology (Principles and Coordination)

Source

During the last few years there has been an increased understanding of the essential role of good terminology in every aspect of business, government, and general living. Within ASTM, the work has been stimulated by its Committee on Terminology (COT). A corresponding activity in international standards centers in the work of ISO Technical Committee/TC 37. The United States participates in the work of ISO through the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the ISO-member body for the United States. International standards are becoming of increasing importance to American interests as we approach 1993 and implementation of the EEC. Although terminology is very important in every aspect of the development of standards, the United States was participating in the essential work of ISO/TC 37 only as an observing (O-) member until mid-1989. This paper will describe the need for participation by the United States, actions that led to the formation of a U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) for ISO/TC 37, the registration of the United States as a P-(participating) member with ASTM as the TAG administrator, and a description of the programs that are in progress.
