Nonlinear Damping Due to Boundary Motion

Source

It is demonstrated in this paper that nonlinear anelastic solids can exhibit automodulations depending on the signs and magnitudes of the nonlinear damping coefficients. In an indium-thallium (In-Tl) single crystal driven in the 10-Hz frequency range to a strain amplitude larger than 0.05, automodulation occurs at temperatures below 283 K. The frequency of automodulation varies with the temperature and displays the maximum at 267 K. It is proposed that the automodulation is the result of twin boundary motion and caused by the nonlinearity of the damping term reflecting impurity drag.
