Comparative Performance of Polymer Modified Hot Mix and the Practical Problems of Ensuring Performance

To realize the benefits in performance that modified asphalts can give to road pavements attention has to be addressed to the practical problems of their handling, storage and usage by contractors. Problems have been identified on some job sites due to varying percentiles of the modifier caused by poor handling at the coating plant. Some rheological properties of the modified asphalts are of lesser utility for assessing performance than tests such as the Dry Wheel Tracking Test. There must be a clear perception by specifiers as to what specific problems they need to be solved so that the right modifier is used in a cost effective way.
