Ignition of Materials in Oxygen Atmospheres: Comparison of Different Testing Methods for Ranking Materials

This document concerns testing methods used at L'AIR LIQUIDE Centre de Technologie et d'Expertises — Le Blanc Mesnil (France) and already described in another paper, i.e. “bomb test” (autogenous temperature determination), adiabatic compression test, oxygen index test (OI test) and impact test in LOX. We have, in particular, compared the so-called “bomb test” results with those given by the adiabatic compression test (used for ranking materials in BAM — FRG). These results appear to agree well. The bomb test results are also compared to the impact test results in LOX ; a certain correlation between these two methods has also been found. It appears that to be able to withstand the impact test in LOX, materials need to have a rather high auto-ignition temperature in oxygen ; however, this is a necessary, but insufficient condition. When comparing OI test results with bomb test results, it was not possible to draw any correlation. This could be explained by the fact that OI test allows conditions of ignition propagation to be investigated, whereas other tests give information on ignition initiation.
