Effects of Moisture Absorption on Edge Delamination, Part I: Analysis of the Effects of Nonuniform Moisture Distributions on Strain Energy Release Rate

Source

The effects of a nonuniform moisture distribution on the edge delamination of composite laminates were analyzed. The analysis was performed using a laminated plate theory analysis and a quasi-three-dimensional finite element method. The total strain energy release rate and its mixed mode components were evaluated for both uniform and nonuniform moisture distributions, and the corresponding results were compared. Both of the analyses employed a Fickian diffusion model to determine the hygroscopic concentration profile across the thickness of a laminate.
