The New Jersey Toxicity Test Laboratory Certification Program

It is critical for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to obtain scientifically valid and defensible data in order to successfully fulfill its environmental protection responsibilities. To that end, the Department developed and on 6 Aug. 1981 adopted “Regulations Governing Laboratory Certification and Standards of Performance,” NJAC 7:18 et seq. Laboratories receiving certification in the bioassay category of the regulations must have complied with specific quality control criteria. This paper will discuss the regulations, our experiences in administering them, and the process of regulation development.
