Airborne Remote Sensing as a Tool for Monitoring Landfill Sites Within an Urban Environment


The use of remote sensing imagery to facilitate the management of landfill sites in urban areas has, to date, been primarily confined to the use of conventional aerial photography. The potential of airborne video thermography, and the high resolution and the range of spectral bands offered by the Airborne Thematic Mapper (ATM) for monitoring landfill sites are under evaluation, with the ultimate aim of establishing an economic methodology that can be employed for rapidly surveying landfill sites within a large urban area. Detailed investigations of one urban landfill site in the West Midlands of the UK have been undertaken using ATM imagery and aerial photography obtained in 1992, and ATM imagery and thermography acquired in 1994. This work has enabled recommendations to be made regarding the techniques employed in monitoring by remote sensing which revolve around the use of the thermal infra-red band.
