Status and Application of Embrittlement Trend Curves in Germany

Based on the regulations stipulated in the German safety standard KTA 3203, which was revised in 2017, the type and application rules for the use of embrittlement trend curves (ETCs) in Germany are explained. The design criteria of the ETCs are described in terms of historical developments and reactor pressure vessel (RPV) design principles, including specific features such as the upper-limit curve RTlimit in dependence on the neutron fluence. The evaluation method for the involvement of RPV surveillance test data in the prediction is discussed as well. Experiences in using ETCs for the determination of reference temperatures with appropriate margins are summarized considering the requirements of safety standards and guidelines. Finally, selected examples are given for the use of such ETC applications regarding RPV integrity assessment.
