Evaluation of Existing Steep Sloped Roof Assemblies for Changes to Thermal, Moisture, and Ventilation Performance: A New Joint E06/D08 Standard in Action

Source

ASTM Draft, Standard Guide for Evaluation of Existing Steep Sloped Roof Assemblies for Changes to Thermal, Moisture, and Ventilation Performance, is currently being developed through a joint effort between ASTM E06 and ASTM D08. The draft standard is intended to provide guidance for assessing existing steep sloped roof assemblies and attic spaces prior to altering the insulation, vapor control layers, or ventilation aspects of the assemblies. With revisions to the energy codes now requiring insulation and continuous air barriers within the building envelope, the thermal- and vapor-resistant properties of existing steep sloped roof and attic assemblies are often altered without proper evaluation of the performance of the entire enclosure. The assemblies of existing buildings must be evaluated prior to such alterations to help ensure that the addition of insulation or vapor-resistant materials or the alteration to natural ventilation provisions does not cause moisture-related issues over the life of the building. This paper discusses the development of the draft standard and the strategy for formal balloting and collecting feedback between two ASTM committees. The paper also outlines the application of the standard by providing an overview of two case studies in which the procedures within the standard were executed successfully. One case study describes the field study and hygrothermal analysis needed to address condensation issues at an international airport terminal. A second case study describes the field study and review of condensation at the underside of a metal roof deck of an art museum.
