Stress Intensity Factor Calibration of Edge-Notched Beam

Source

Several solutions necessary to determine the mixed-mode stress intensity factors in edge-notched plane stress beams subject to a wide variety of loading conditions are given. These solutions include stress intensity factors in an edge-notched beam subject to: (1) pure moment, (2) pure shear, (3) a point load at the bottom of the beam in the vicinity of the crack, and (4) a point load at the top of the beam in the vicinity of the crack. The solutions have been obtained through use of the finite element and boundary force methods. The techniques necessary to obtain accurate stress intensity factors using both methods are described. The convergence characteristics and behavior of both the finite element and the boundary force methods are discussed. The solutions are provided in approximate functional form for ease of use. An example is presented to demonstrate the use of the solutions.
