Improvements in GCr15 (52100) High Carbon Bearing Steel Steelmaking and Their Effect on Inclusions, Segregation, and Fatigue Properties

Source

Steel cleanliness with regard to nonmetallic inclusions is critical for fatigue properties, and steel homogeneity is important for manufacturing considerations, such as controlling distortion after hardening. The final bearing steel quality is also dependent on the chosen steelmaking processes. In Jiangyin Xingcheng (JYXC), the oxygen content of Ruhrstahl-Heraeus recirculating degasser (RH) degassed steel is around 0.5 ppm lower than tank vacuum degassed steel. There are also fewer MgO-Al2O3 and MgO-Al2O3-CaO inclusions in RH degassed steel. Steel cleanliness improves with an increase in tundish residence time and a decrease of the dead zone ratio. Optimization of the casting parameters such as superheat and the degree of soft reduction will improve the segregation characteristics of the steel. Details of GCr15 (52100) bearing steel properties and the improvements made by JYXC are discussed in this paper.
