Characterization of Ceramic Matrix Composite Tubes Under Uniaxial/Biaxial Monotonic and Cyclic Loading

Source

A method for testing ceramic matrix composite (Almax fiber-reinforced alumina matrix) tubes under monotonic and cyclic loads (tensile/compression, torsional, and biaxial) is described. A data interpretation method is developed to determine ply-level elastic properties from elastic response of the tube measured under monotonic loadings. Monotonic tests were carried out at room temperature to determine the tensile and torsional strengths. Fatigue behavior under tension-tension, torsion-torsion, and biaxial cyclic loads was studied. Damage and failure modes of the tubes under these test conditions are described in detail.
