Notch-Tip Stresses and Strains Under Nonproportional Loading


An analytical method for estimating notch-root elastic-plastic strains and stresses in isotropic bodies subjected to multiaxial nonproportional loading sequences is presented. Two models are proposed based on the analysis of strain energy density in the notch-tip region. Each model consists of a set of seven relationships that can be solved easily for elastic-plastic strain and stress increments knowing the fictitious notch-tip elastic stress history and the material stress-strain curve. Results of the validation show that the proposed methods compare well with finite element data and that each solution set forms the limits of a band within which actual notch-tip strains can be found.
