Fracture and Fatigue Properties of Cobalt Chrome Alloys Used For Medical Implants

Source

A method for determining the fatigue limit properties for metallic medical implant materials using an engineered test specimen is described. Here, we examine the fatigue properties of an as-received cobalt chrome alloy with accelerated testing to 10 million cycles for three R-ratios. Failure probability curves in alternating-mean stress space are determined to provide limit criteria for evaluating similar geometries during design optimization and validation.
