Taguchi Experiment on the Mechanical Properties of Sintered Titanium 6-4

Source

This experiment involved the use of Taguchi experimental techniques in order to determine the effect of surface finish, initial (presinter) test bar diameter, and material grade (standard or Eli Ti-6Al-4V) on the mechanical properties of this material after sintering.

A total of 40 test bars were run according to the established parameters of the experiment and the results were then compiled in one of two Signal-to-Noise equations. The output from these equations was then placed in a standard ANOVA (analysis of variance) table to look for the most influencing factors on the mechanical properties of the sintered Ti-6-4.

It was discovered that there was an extremely strong correlation between initial test bar diameter and yield strength. The study showed that the smaller diameter material produced lower yield strength results. There was also a minor correlation between surface finish and percent elongation.

The conclusions drawn from this work are that certain test parameters can have a significant effect on the apparent mechanical properties of sintered Titanium.
