The Use of Semi-Active Suspensions to Reduce Pavement Damage

Multiple axle groups of heavy trucks can generate peak dynamic tire loads that are greatly in excess of their static loads. This paper reviews previous simulation studies that compare the performance of alternative suspensions (for example, 4 spring, walking beam, and air suspension). In addition, the design of an electronically modulated shock absorber is presented for application on a tandem suspension. Simulation studies are then presented to compare the performance of this concept with the previously discussed suspension types. Recent laboratory data illustrating the performance of semi-active dampers to reduce dynamic tire loads will be presented.
