Silicone Preformed Joint Seals (PJS) and Their Applications

Source

Silicone preformed joint seals (PJS) can be used in most any application where conventional wet applied sealants are used. However, in many applications, they perform even better. The most fundamental properties that make this system attractive are: 1) very low bond-line forces and 2) the insensitivity to movement during cure. PJS systems produce very little bond stress which translates into better, longer lasting adhesion. Therefore, PJS systems are the best choice to use on sensitive substrates such as EIFS, sandstone or grout where most normal wet applied sealants will pull the substrate apart at the surface. Movement during cure can be a problem with many wet applied sealant systems. Movement during cure is not a problem with the preformed joint seal system because the bulk of the sealing material is already cured and the set-up time for the adhesive is negligible. Data to support these claims is shown along with proper application procedures. The joint preparation is very easy, especially for band-aid type applications, which translates into reasonable installed costs. The durability and weatherability of silicone based PJS are equivalent to quality silicone sealants. The authors' opinion of critical performance parameters in such systems is also detailed
