Novel Mini-Chamber Procedure for Screening Insulation for Emission of Formaldehyde and Other VOCs


Methods have been developed to allow rapid screening of insulation samples for formaldehyde emission under conditions of controlled temperature and relative humidity. Cored samples of the insulation are packed into 50-mL drying tubes and placed into a small drying oven whose sides have been drilled out to allow for multiple inlet and outlet ports. Results can be correlated with those obtained by standard small-chamber methods. A similar procedure has been developed to estimate TVOCs out-gassed by insulation, using a GC/MS analytical finish.
