Manganese Containing Water Conditioners for Use with Glyphosate in Glyphosate-Resistant Soybean

Source

Manganese (Mn) containing water conditioners have been developed and marketed with the intent of simultaneously alleviating Mn deficiency symptoms in glyphosate resistant soybean and protecting glyphosate from the negative effects of hard water cations on weed control. The objectives of this study were (1) to evaluate the effect of several Mn containing water conditioners tank-mixed with glyphosate on weed control, and (2) to evaluate the Mn containing water conditioners for their ability to alleviate Mn deficiency in soybean. Manganese deficient field soils and a commercial potting mix were used to grow plants in greenhouse experiments. Field studies were established on a site with a history of Mn deficiency in soybean. Glyphosate and various commercial water conditioners were applied alone or in tank-mixtures using sprayers. In both greenhouse and field studies, all Mn containing water conditioners reduced glyphosate efficacy compared to water conditioners without Mn. However, not all Mn-containing products were equally antagonistic to glyphosate efficacy. Application of a Mn containing water conditioners tank-mixed with glyphosate overcame Mn deficiency in soybean plants in both greenhouse and field experiments.
