Innovative Technology in Sludge Processing—Lime Stabilization/Pasteurization Versus Traditional Methods

Present and promulgated Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations require that sludges generated by waste water treatment plants be treated prior to their discharge into the environment. There are several ways to achieve the reduction in volatile solids or pathogen kill, or both, required by these regulations. Of all the methods available, the combination of lime stabilization and pasteurization, using the heat of hydration as the sole heat source for pasteurization, has distinct advantages and disadvantages. The applicability of this innovative technique shall be proven in this brief overview.
