The Documentation of the National Trust's Historic Properties

Source

The National Trust for Historic Preservation, since its 1949 Congressional charter as a nonprofit private corporation with a historic preservation mission, has acquired a collection of historic properties from private donors. The collection includes public historic house museum properties and private historic properties which are sold by the Trust after documentation with easements retained. Since 1949, under different managements at the Trust, various programs of research and documentation have been undertaken on the property assets including buildings and infrastructure, landscapes, archaeological resources, object collections, and archival resources. For the various assets, the documentation projects are defined by the specific property's needs, the end goals, and the available budget.

This paper reviews several recent projects undertaken at both public and private properties. The paper's intent is to indicate the varying scope of the projects and to discuss this variation from the property owner's project management perspective.
