Fatigue Test Methodology and Results for Ceramic Matrix Composites at Room and Elevated Temperatures

This paper discusses experimental methods and test results from a program designed to evaluate the mechanical response of glass and ceramic matrix composite (CMC) materials exposed to monotonic and cyclic mechanical loads at various temperatures. Experimental techniques discussed include specimen design, gripping and alignment, heating method, temperature measurement, and displacement measurement. Test results discussed include the relationship between mechanical response under monotonic loading and failure under cycling load. Of particular interest in these relationships are the matrix micro-cracking level, long-life (>106 cycles) maximum cyclic stress, loss of modulus during cyclic loading tests, and the influence of temperature and environment.
