Tribological Characteristics of Elastomeric and Elastomeric/Thermoplastic Contacts under Conformal Sliding Conditions


The use of polymers as mechanical components in gear pumps is an important technology offering unique performance features and capabilities. In this investigation, the friction and wear of elastomeric pump rotors against thermoplastics and elastomeric composites was investigated under dry conditions in the annular, conformal contact configuration. Also, viscoelastic relaxation response of elastomeric pump rotors was evaluated due to its long-term effects on face sealing forces. To screen candidate materials, a test device was designed and constructed to simulate both the axial face seal configuration and the combined configuration containing both the face seals and rotors. The results indicated that the friction and wear of the elastomeric rotors at moderate sliding speeds was catastrophic in a relatively short time period. Improvements in the tribological performance were obtained when the face seal material was changed to a thermoplastic composite containing solid lubricants.
