Amateur Youth Ice Hockey Coaches' Views on Rule Infractions, Aggressive Play, and Injuries During Games

Source

The purpose of this study was to examine the views of youth ice hockey coaches (n=12) when asked to discuss their game behaviors related to (a) rule infractions, (b) aggressive play, and (c) injuries. A total of 48 stimulated recall interview transcripts were analyzed. Results show that (a) rule infractions, aggressive play, and injuries became more salient issues as the level of ice hockey increased, (b) issues related to violence and aggression seemed to be more predominant in men's ice hockey than in women's ice hockey, (c) only 15% of the statements regarding officials were positive, compared to 50% that were negative, and (d) injuries were more frequently discussed by coaches at the levels that allowed body contact.
